Be Kind To Your Mind – Your Head Might Explode!

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

I used to think way too much. I would continually ask myself questions over and over again and ponder deeply in a confused miasma of circular thinking. I was addicted to it. My wife would tease me, “Be careful — your head might explode!”

The mind is designed to generate thought, but sometimes we get into mental ruts of endless constant analysis where you never solve anything or reach a point of completion.

Less Mind On Purpose

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

I think we think too much. Don’t get me wrong, I think the mind is an amazing tool to help us live and survive in this world, but sometimes it feels like my incredible thinking machine has a life of its own!

When I start thinking, thoughts seem to morph from one thought to another. “I need to mow the lawn” and suddenly the color green flashes before me. Now I’m thinking of “money” which leads to thoughts of retirement. Then I think, “who will care for me?” transforms to, “I wonder what it will be like to die alone?”

Reduce Suffering: Increase Awareness with Meditation

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

Knocking down the walls of conditioning and ego opens up new vistas. Your perspective widens. Expansion reveals a deeper intelligence, awake and alive, pulsating with loving energy. I go to this place when I meditate. It’s the Ground of Being, and this is my home.

Remembering the deeper states of awareness in your daily life and allowing it to infuse all you do makes life more joyful and effortless. Your life becomes a meditation. Being able to watch your thoughts as you think them enables you to actively see what does not serve you. In this observation, thoughts that don’t serve you, simply fall away.

Shades of Ego: Secrets Revealed

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

“The really ego less person is not humble at all. He is neither arrogant nor humble; he is simply himself.” ~Osho

“God = Man minus Ego” ~Sri Sathya Sai Baba

To function in the world we need ego. Ego is your sense of individuality or awareness of the self. In the psychological sense, the ego’s quality is self-organizing, mechanistic and neutral. This simple awareness of self is required, and serves a valuable purpose. The subtle ego is with us in sleep, and present even in higher states of consciousness.

5 Simple Steps to Enlightenment

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

The mind itself is intangible, in fact it does not exist. The surest way to control it is to seek it. Then its activities cease. ~Sri Ramana Maharshi

Enlightenment is your essential being. It is your natural state. There is nothing to be attained, you are already enlightened. When all layers of the onion skin are peeled away, what remains is enlightenment. You will know enlightenment when you experience a quiet allness in nothingness.

Surrender
Let go. Release the past and any desire to want more. Forget your culture, forget your gender. Be open and accept who you are, where you are and where you’ve come from. Be like a freshly fallen leaf at the end of its life cycle, golden in color, gently floating along on the water’s surface, without fighting, without knowing where you’re headed. Enjoy the ride.

Spiritual Journeys in Gratitude, Compassion and Wonder

Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing. -Mother Teresa

God doesn’t require us to succeed; he only requires that you try. -Mother Teresa

I was amazed in reading a review of Mother Teresa: Come Be My Light that the saint from India had such difficulty in sustaining an on-going presence of God in her life. I share a similar problem. What follows are three spiritual journeys I take to combat the problem. (more…)

Moonlight Nirvana

Friday, October 17th, 2008

I love to think of nature as an unlimited broadcasting station, through which God speaks to us every hour, if we will only tune in. ~George Washington Carver

Being French Canadian and part Cree Indian my love of the land burns strong inside me. Last night while camping in the Nantahala Forest I decided to go for a moonlit paddle. I slipped my 17 foot Kevlar canoe into the cold gray water and suddenly my world was transformed.

The full moon revealed a silent panorama of shadow, light and sparkle. Silence prevailed except for the pulsating lullaby of tree frogs and the lapping waves against my boat. With eager strokes I moved closer to the center of the lake. In awe, I peered behind me to gaze on the glistening triangular reflection of moonlight left in the wake of fresh rippling water. There was a hint of pine in the autumn air and a gentle breeze brushed my face. I looked up in amazement at the diamond-studded sky. Reflections of cottage lights glistening on the water only added more stars to the spectacle.

There is nothing in the world so much like prayer as music is. ~William P. Merrill
